Tottenham Hotspur could offload midfielder Victor Wanyama.
According to Football.London, Mauricio Pochettino and Steve Hitchen would plan to replace Victor Wanyama with another midfielder if he leaves Tottenham this summer.
Wanyama, 28, reunited with Spurs boss Pochettino in 2016, joining in a bargain £11million move (Guardian), having worked together at Southampton.
The Kenyan midfielder enjoyed an outstanding first season with Spurs, scoring five goals in 47 games, but his career with Tottenham has rapidly nosedived since then.
Injuries and poor fitness have cost Wanyama dearly, and he started just four Premier League games last season, summing up his fall from grace under Pochettino – a manager who previously made him a key player at two clubs.
It’s now believed that Tottenham will have replacements ready to target if Wanyama does go this summer, with Pochettino and Hitchen having targets in mind.
Some had wondered whether Tanguy Ndombele’s arrival meant that he would be Wanyama’s replacement, but Tottenham may yet have another midfield target in mind.
An English player would be ideal, with Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips particularly appealing, given his experience playing in Marcelo Bielsa’s system, and as we know, many of Pochettino’s tactical principles come from mentor Bielsa.
Isaac Hayden would be a less-hyped signing, but Spurs would need that physical, combative nature that Wanyama brings, and with homegrown players needed, it would be little surprise if those two players popped up on the Spurs radar.
