According to La Razon, Mauricio Pochettino would demand the signing of Newcastle target Kieran Trippier if he replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
What’s the story?
Well, it was the Mirror who claimed that Eddie Howe has made the £20m Atlético Madrid man his first target at Newcastle.
However, the BBC believe Pochettino is interested in replacing Solskjaer at Manchester United, which could throw a spanner in the works for Howe.
La Razon believe Pochettino is keen to take Trippier to Old Trafford, and the 35-cap England international would welcome a return to the Premier League.
The 31-year-old left Tottenham in 2019 to link up with Diego Simeone in Madrid, and he shone as Atlético Madrid won La Liga last season.
In 83 appearances for the Spanish giants, Trippier has registered 11 assists.
Newcastle should be wary of Manchester United
La Razon add that the Red Devils tried to sign Trippier in 2020, so there is clearly long-term interest in the ex-Burnley man.
That will surely make the right-back feel wanted, and coupled with the fact he knows Pochettino well, Newcastle should be concerned about their chances.
After all, in the current climate, Newcastle aren’t the most attractive.
Yes, the Magpies are a huge club, and now have owners who understand that, but the ‘work’ of Steve Bruce has made things different.
Are top players like Trippier going to willingly enter a relegation battle in January, when they could also opt for Pochettino and Manchester United?
In our view, that seems unlikely.
If Howe can get a few wins before the January window opens, then it may be a different story.
As things stand, however, players of Trippier’s quality aren’t going to risk adding a relegation to their CV with Newcastle winless in 12 Premier League games.
