Report: Pochettino to ask Spurs chief Levy for £100m transfer budget

Tottenham Hotspur have secured another impressive finish in the Premier League, and Mauricio Pochettino is targeting a major summer for the club.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Mauricio Pochettino will head into talks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy this week determined to land a transfer budget of at least £100 million, while the Spurs boss is also determined to bag a salary that puts him in the same bracket as some of those in charge of their top four rivals in the Premier League.

Pochettino has done a fantastic job during his time at Tottenham and ended this season having delivered a third place finish while the club also reached the knockout stages of the Champions League and got to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

And he plans to seek the kind of funds that will allow the club to progress further when Pochettino and Levy meet for talks this week. The Mail reports that the Argentinian is keen to secure Levy’s word that he will be able to spend at least £100 million during the transfer window, while he also plans to ask for a salary increase before putting pen to paper on a new deal.

The Mail adds that Pochettino currently earns £5.5 million and wants to be taking home closer to the £9 million that Antonio Conte earns at Chelsea – which could put Levy under a little pressure given that it is the Blues who are interested in pulling off an unlikely move to lure the former Southampton boss to Stamford Bridge.

The likes of Anthony Martial, Wilfried Zaha and Ryan Sessegnon are on Pochettino’s radar, according to the report, so it appears that Spurs could potentially be in for an exciting summer if Levy agrees to his demands.

While Pochettino has really helped some players develop significantly in the past, it would arguably be a huge disappointment for Tottenham fans if Levy was not able to back him with the funds that he is asking for.

Unfortunately due to what went on last summer, £100 million is not an astronomical figure in today’s game and may only buy two or three players who could potentially improve Spurs’ first-team – and they may still have to appear to be major bargains.

It may appear that Pochettino may be asking for serious amounts of money from the chairman this week, but in reality, the budget he is requesting may well still end up being considerably smaller than what some of their rivals may look to pay.
