Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Jose Maria Gimenez.
According to Tutto Mercato Web, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez – though a deal doesn’t quite add up.
Gimenez, 22, joined Atletico from Danubio in his native Uruguay back in the summer of 2013, having made just 16 first-team appearances before his move to Spain.
The Uruguayan became an important player under Diego Simeone though, featuring prominently alongside compatriot Diego Godin in the heart of the Atletico defence.
Stefan Savic’s emergence has eaten into Gimenez’s playing time though, and with just six starts in call competitions this season, a move could be on the cards.
Tutto Mercato Web report that Tottenham have their eyes on Gimenez, with manager Mauricio Pochettino potentially looking for talks with former international teammate Simeone over a possible deal.
Pochettino has turned Spurs from a fragile side defensively into one of the Premier League’s most impressive back lines, but that makes a deal for Gimenez seem somewhat unlikely.
Not only do Spurs already have two top centre backs in Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen – who have played together for years with Ajax, Belgium and Spurs – but they also splashed the cash on Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez over the summer.
It’s difficult to see exactly where Gimenez would fit in, as talented as he is, and he wouldn’t come cheap either, with a big transfer fee better spent on another area of the pitch, such as another midfielder or a winger.
The only possible way this makes sense if Tottenham have legitimate concerns over Alderweireld’s future, given that he has yet to sign a new contract – and Gimenez would make sense as a possible replacement, but any immediate move for the Atletico ace seems hard to believe.
