Aston Villa and Leeds United are apparently being put off by Sergio Romero’s wage demands, ESPN state.

Romero earns a sizeable pay packet at Manchester United currently, and it is said that he would have to take a salary drop if he was to join Leeds or Aston Villa.

The Daily Mirror have reported how both Dean Smith and Marcelo Bielsa are keen on the Argentine, but getting a deal over the line is proving problematic.

Romero seemingly is eager for more first-team action, but whether he will be willing to take a financial hit to get that remains to be seen.

If Romero was to join Villa he could well become their first choice straight away, although there is plenty of competition of a place between the sticks at Villa Park.

Smith already has Orjan Nyland and Tom Heaton, who are both credible options.

Leeds, meanwhile, go into the campaign with youngster Ilian Meslier looking likely to start.

Leeds may well feel that they need a more experienced stopper, but Meslier has coped well in the first-team so far, and the hope is that the 20-year-old can handle the step up again.

Romero would make a more solid option, but it is understandable why Leeds won’t pay huge money to get him in the door, as they will surely feel confident in Meslier’s abilities.
