Back in January, it was said that Georginio Wijnaldum wanted to join Arsenal, after falling out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain.

Ultimately, a move to the Emirates Stadium never materialised for the Netherlands international, and he was consequently left out of PSG’s squad for the Champions League knockout phases.

Now, under new management in Christophe Galtier, PSG have decided to sell Wijnaldum for a very tempting price – in our view at least.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, the French champions want just €10m (£9m) for the 31-year-old.

Clearly, Galtier has no intention of using Wijnaldum in the 2022/23 campaign, with PSG’s new Director of Football Luis Campos also presumably keen to offload his £180,000-a-week salary from the wage bill.

Arsenal are seemingly on the lookout for another option in the centre of midfield, with Mikel Arteta eyeing a move for Leicester maestro Youri Tielemans.

It remains to be seen if the Gunners show any interest in Wijnaldum, but with the player keen on joining, it may not be a bad idea to sign him given the fee involved.

Arsenal should sign Wijnaldum

In our view, £9m for a player of Wijnaldum’s quality is a bargain.

We’re talking about a player who won the Premier League and the Champions League during his time in England with Liverpool, where he played a crucial role in one of the best sides in Europe.

Wijnaldum made 237 appearances under Jürgen Klopp, and while he didn’t always grab the spotlight, his work in midfield was vitally important to the Reds.

One difficult season at the Parc des Princes doesn’t wash all of that away.

Wijnaldum has proven his ability to shine in England, and if Arsenal pay the £9m, he could turn out to be the signing of the summer.
