The former Everton left-back Luke Garbutt is a ‘genuine target’ for Sunderland, according to The Sunderland Echo.

Garbutt was released by Everton after 11 years earlier this summer – with the Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti later admitting that he didn’t even know who he was.

In the Italian’s defence, the 27-year-old had spent the entirety of his reign on loan to Sunderland’s League One rivals, Ipswich Town, who remain keen on a full-time deal, The Echo claims.

Garbutt scored or made nine goals in 30 games for Ipswich last season and found the net in their 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Portman Road.

He is also said to have interest from Championship clubs.

But a return to the north with Sunderland could appeal to the Harrogate-born player whom Everton prised from Leeds United’s academy system.

Garbutt, who played just 12 times for Everton, would provide fresh competition for Denver Hume after Declan John’s return to Swansea City.
