Remi Matthews is closing in on a move to Sunderland after his Bolton Wanderers contract came to an end, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.
The Black Cats have already brought in two impressive additions at either end of the pitch, landing Bailey Wright and Aiden O’Brien on free transfers, and it seems they are on the verge of welcoming a new goalkeeper to the Stadium of Light too.
Sunderland are under pressure to find a man capable of stepping up in the absence of Jon McLaughlin.
And it looks for all the world as if Matthews, a man Phil Parkinson knows very well, will be the Chosen One on Wearside.
The Lancashire Telegraph reports that Sunderland have fought off competition from League One rivals Ipswich Town for his signature, with the Tractor Boys now looking for targets elsewhere.
The East Anglian Daily Times backs up those claims, saying that Matthews was training with Ipswich earlier in the summer but has since departed.
The 26-year-old only joined Bolton on a permanent basis last summer, with Parkinson hailing the arrival of a goalkeeper with ‘real quality’ between the sticks.
Matthews has also played League One football in the colours of Burton Albion, Doncaster Rovers and Plymouth Argyle.
It remains to be seen, however, if he can establish himself as the number one on Wearside with Lee Burge looking to seize a rare opportunity after McLaughlin’s move to Rangers.
