Brazilian outlet UOL Deportes claims Ajax are expecting to sell David Neres in the January window. The player is likely to leave if his £16.75million price tag is met, with Everton and Newcastle both interested in the player.
Neres, 24, has fallen out of the starting XI at Ajax under Erik Ten Hag this season. This season, he has started just six of his 22 games, scoring four goals. It is a far cry compared to the form prior to this season.
Jeunes Footeux report that seven-time Brazil international Neres has emerged as a target for Newcastle and Rafa Benitez’s Everton. Lyon are also said to have made a loan-to-buy offer for the Champions League club’s no.7.
But UOL Deportes claims that Neres is now ‘expected’ to leave Ajax this month. That is, even though Ajax have rejected an offer of £12.5million from Shakhtar Donetsk from Neres. Everton and Newcastle remain keen.
Neres for £16.75m: Everton and Newcastle should take the risk
While his form has been poor this season, given he is not starting games, Neres is still a top player. Coming into the campaign, he had produced 82 goal involvements in 158 appearances for Ajax – scoring 43, creating 39.
He can play anywhere across the front three. Out wide, in the 10 role or even up top. Neres is still young and has the ability to get even better, if he is given the necessary game time and platform to do so.
Newcastle could do with a no.7. Ryan Fraser is the current option, but combining Kieran Trippier with Neres makes sense. Everton have plenty of options out wide, having signed Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend.
