The former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has been mentioned as an option for Blackburn Rovers, according to The Lancashire Telegraph.

Elliot was released by Newcastle after nine years on Tyneside, earlier this summer.

And he is one of several free agents said to be under consideration, amid claims that Blackburn will bring in a back-up to their newly-signed shot-stopper Thomas Kaminski.

Elliot spent most of his Newcastle career occupying a similar role, although he still boasts 79 appearances in England’s top two divisions.

The 34-year-old already has ties to the Blackburn area, having had two spells on loan to Accrington Stanley earlier in his career.

The Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood is another with whom Blackburn have been linked.

Westwood was the subject of an enquiry from Rovers last month, according to Lancashire Live.

But asked whether Wednesday had indeed received an approach for the Republic of Ireland international, the Owls boss Garry Monk told Yorkshire Live: “None that I am aware of right now. That’s an ongoing situation. There is nothing imminent on that side.”
