A Premier League player has told the Athletic how he’s heard that Glasgow Rangers and Celtic could join the Premier League, if the breakaway six are kicked out.

The Premier League clubs are meeting today to discuss whether every European Super League club could be thrown out of the league.

That could present an opportunity for Rangers and Celtic to move to the English game, as the top flight would have six slots to fill.

An unnamed Premier League player has now stated how he’s heard that Steven Gerrard’s and John Kennedy’s sides could be included, alongside four Championship teams.

The Athletic quotes the player as saying: “We’ve been talking about it.

“Someone said Rangers and Celtic could come in and four teams will come in from the Championship (to make it 20 clubs again).”

The possibility of Rangers and Celtic joining the Premier League has long been talked about.

It should be pointed out that the player also may just be speculating, rather than being given inside information.

But it is interesting to hear that the possibility of Rangers and Celtic joining is now being discussed by players in England’s top tier already.

The consequence of Rangers and Celtic switching leagues would obviously be huge for Scottish football.

But with the full scale of the impact of the creation of the Super League still not known, nothing should be ruled out at this juncture.
