Derby County defender Mike te Wierik could be heading back to Holland in the January transfer window, with his agent telling Tubantia that a winter exit from Pride Park would be ‘great’ news.
In truth, the writing was on the wall for the Dutchman as soon as compatriot Phillip Cocu paid the price for a miserable start to the 2020/21 season.
Te Wierik has not kicked a ball in anger since the former PSV Eindhoven boss was sacked in November.
He was left out of the matchday squad once again for the much-needed midweek win against Swansea City too.
“It would be great if he had a new club in January,” said Harold Eijkelkamp, the 28-year-old’s agent as speculation increases.
“That can be on loan, but also fixed (a permanent transfer). We do not know yet. First we still have to get started with Derby. “
Te Wierik captained Groningen during three years at the Euroborg and Tubantia believe he could make a sudden return to the Eredivisie high-flyers next month.
Fortuna Sittard are also interested, and with good reason. Only one team in the division has conceded more goals than struggling Fortuna so far (30 after 12 games).
Of course, Te Wierik was unfortunate to see Cocu depart just weeks after he joined the Rams, but the summer signing does have to shoulder his share of the blame as he slips down the pecking order.
The experienced stopper made a number of high-profile mistakes in his first few Derby outings and was even sent off on his debut against Reading in September.
