Phil Neville is reportedly interested in landing the Everton job.
According to BBC Sport, former Everton captain Phil Neville is interested in taking the reins at Goodison Park following the sacking of manager Ronald Koeman.
The Toffees decided that enough was enough on Monday afternoon, sacking Ronald Koeman less than 24 hours after a 5-2 home defeat to Arsenal.
In truth, Koeman’s sacking has been coming for many weeks now, as he wasn’t getting the best out of his expensive summer signings, and he leaves having lost five of his nine Premier League games in charge this term.
With Koeman’s 16-month reign now over, the attention immediately turns to finding a replacement, and whilst a number of big names have been linked, one former Everton captain allegedly wants the job.
BBC Sport now report that ex-Everton midfielder Phil Neville is interested in landing the job, in what would be a major shock move from the Toffees.
Neville, 40, joined Everton from Manchester United back in 2005, and became captain just two years later as he played a key role under David Moyes, racking up a total of 303 appearances for the club before retiring in 2013.
Neville took steps into coaching, following Moyes to Manchester United in 2013 as his first-team coach, before recently serving as Valencia assistant manager, working alongside Nuno Espirito Santo – now of Wolves – as well as brother Gary Neville.
Now, Neville wants a manager’s job with Everton, but a move seems unlikely. Neville’s lack of managerial experience will certainly count against him as Everton no doubt filter through applications from much more qualified managers, and whilst he knows the club, Neville is surely a long shot for the job.
