Is Alfredo Morelos set to leave Scottish Premiership giants Rangers to reunite with Caixinha at Liga MX outfit Cruz Azul?
Few would have expected that Pedro Caixinha would ever work with Alfredo Morelos again.
But with Caixinha putting together a team capable of ending Cruz Azul’s 21-year trophy drought in Mexico, the Scottish Sun report that he is keen to sign the Colombian striker for the second time.
Few had heard of Morelos when he joined Rangers from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2017. But Morelos was arguably the only one of Caixinha’s many signings who can be considered an absolute success in Scottish football.
Though a lack of discipline remains an issue, Morelos’ 30 goals and 11 assists last season was hugely impressive.
And, according to the Scottish Sun, Caixinha is planning a shock reunion with the 22-year-old at ambitious, big spending Liga MX giants Cruz Azul.
Considering how highly the madcap coach spoke of Morelos during his ill-fated Rangers tenure, it is perhaps no surprise that he is hoping to work with the youth South American again.
“I am really pleased for Alfredo because he is a young boy with terrific potential in front of him, you can see the hunger and desire,” Caixinha told Rangers’ official website in 2017.
Considering that the striker himself has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League, while courting interest from big clubs in Spain, Germany and France, it seems very unlikely that he will leave Scotland for a sideways step in Mexico.
And with Rangers demanding £20 million (Sky), surely that is far too much even for a Cruz Azul side who haven’t been scared to splash the cash in the last 12 months.
