Goalkeeper Paul Woolston has been training with Newcastle’s first team of late.
The 19-year-old had been promoted to first-team training by Benitez and a made a good impression on the Spaniard, but it appears his time at St. James’ Park is set to come to an end.
Woolston joined Newcastle way back in 2013 from bitter rivals Sunderland, but has failed to make a single appearance for the club’s first team.
He has had the odds stacked against him of late, with the likes of Martin Dubravka, Matz Sels, Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman above him in the pecking order.
Instead, the one-time England Under-18 international has been loaned to the likes of Darlington, Blyth Spartans and South Shields in the past two seasons but has failed in his quest for first-team football.
Now, Woolston will depart the Toon this summer with a summer exodus of the club’s Under-23 stars expected to join him, with a number of players nearing the end of their contracts such as defender Curtis Good.
