Harsley is reportedly vying with the former Middlesbrough and current Wycombe Wanderers bosses for the Barnsley vacancy.
Barnsley have placed development coach Paul Harsley at the top of their managerial wish list – alongside the recently sacked Middlesbrough boss, Garry Monk, and Wycombe Wanderers’ Gareth Ainsworth, the Daily Mirror reports [14th February printed edition, page 49].
Harsley has taken the reins on a caretaker basis following Paul Heckingbottom’s departure last week, and oversaw Saturday’s derby draw against Sheffield Wednesday.
And according to the Daily Mirror, the Barnsley hierarchy have been impressed by the 39-year-old’s work in the role, making him the ‘shock front runner’.
Monk, a former Barnsley player, left Middlesbrough in December after just five months in the role.
The 38-year-old managed Leeds United to seventh in the Championship last season, having previously led Swansea City to their highest ever Premier League finish of eighth.
Meanwhile, Ainsworth has taken Wycombe to League Two’s automatic promotion places this season – his sixth at Adams Park.
No mention of Jack Ross?
On the contrary, the Daily Mirror’s sister publication, the Daily Record reports that St Mirren manager Ross is Barnsley’s top target, and would be willing to speak to the Tykes after an official approach was made.
