Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher is reportedly wanted by Panathinaikos.

Much was expected of Steven Fletcher when he joined Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2016 after being released by Sunderland, but the former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker has failed to make a huge impact at the Hillsborough Stadium.

Signed on a free transfer by Wednesday, the Scotland international striker has not exactly been great for the Owls for the past two seasons.

Sheffield Wednesday stats

True, the 31-year-old striker scored 11 goals in 24 Championship starts for Wednesday in 2016-17, but last season, the former Wolves striker managed to score only two goals in 19 league appearances for the Owls – although it must be acknowledged that he has been on the sidelines since last December due to a knee problem.

One suspects that Wednesday would not be too bothered if they are able to offload Fletcher in the summer transfer window, but there is a chance that the striker could be at the Hillsborough Stadium next season despite reported interest from Panathinaikos.

Interest from Panathinaikos

According to Sdna.gr, Panathinaikos are interested in signing Fletcher from Wednesday in the summer transfer window, but the Greek giants are unable to meet his salary.

It has been reported that the Athens-based outfit can only offer Fletcher a yearly salary between €300,000 (£264,774.91m) and €500,000 (£441,291.52), not the €1.5m (£1.5m) he is getting now.

Staying at Sheffield Wednesday

Perhaps Panathinaikos will look elsewhere, and Fletcher could remain at Wednesday, unless, of course, other clubs take interest in him.
