According to West London Sport, Sheffield Wednesday are the frontrunners in the race to sign Chelsea’s Jake Clarke-Salter on loan ahead of Huddersfield Town.
The Owls head into deadline day still looking to strengthen their squad.
Wednesday were dealt a 12-point deduction prior to the season, and they will be hoping another addition or two will aid them in their bid for Championship survival.
Manager Garry Monk is seemingly after a striker and a defender.
And the latest from West London Sport claims the Owls are leading the race to sign Clarke-Salter on loan from Chelsea though they face Huddersfield competition.
Clarke-Salter, a former England U21 captain, has previous Championship experience having enjoyed loan spells at Sunderland and Birmingham City last season.
Former Sunderland boss Chris Coleman was a big fan during his short spell at the Stadium of Light, dubbing him a player with tremendous ability.
“Jake is a hugely talented young player who has jumped at the opportunity to come to this club and show people what he can do. You don’t play for a club like Chelsea unless you have tremendous ability and I’m sure he will be able to demonstrate that for Sunderland,” Coleman told the Gazette.
Clarke-Salter, now 23, isn’t likely to break into Chelsea’s first-team eleven anytime soon therefore another loan spell in the Championship would make sense.
The Owls have lined up with three at the back this season. Joost Van Aken, Tom Lees and Liam Shaw featured in the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers.
It’s likely Monk wants further additions to cover potential injuries and suspensions and central defender Clarke-Salter is versatile enough to play in either role.
The Terriers, meanwhile, signed Naby Sarr from Charlton Athletic last month but manager Carlos Corberan may still be after one more defensive addition.
