Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a move for the Real Betis ace in recent weeks.
According to a report from Spanish media outlet El Confidencial, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has personally contacted Giovani Lo Celso to explain to him the reason behind their low-ball offer for him.
Despite conflicting reports elsewhere, the Spanish publication claims that Spurs have only offered €40 million (£35 million) for the 23-year-old, but Real Betis expect to receive closer to €80 million (£70 million).
El Confidencial claims that Tottenham must sell Christian Eriksen first before they can increase their offer for the Argentine, and that is exactly what Pochettino told the midfielder during a telephone conversation recently.
Good signing for Spurs?
The simple answer to that question is yes, but some common ground will need to be reached between the two clubs regarding his valuation, if he is to move to north London this summer.
Lo Celso will bring some much needed creativity and guile to Tottenham’s midfield, and he is at an age well he will surely only get better under the guidance of Pochettino.
It is unlikely that Spurs will pay £70 million for his services, but it could be argued that the midfielder is well worth that fee in today’s market.
Tottenham need to add some real quality to their ranks this summer, and signing Lo Celso would be a great way in which to kick off their summer business, especially if Eriksen is moved on.
