According to the Express, Jurgen Klopp is focusing on defensive recruits for Liverpool ahead of the January transfer window.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss has seen his backline become ravaged by injuries over the course of a hectic fixture list.

Klopp has lost Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries, while he’s also currently without Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Away from the defence, the German is also without Naby Keita – who was injured against Leicester – as well as Jordan Henderson and Thiago.

In that respect, it makes sense for the ex-Mainz 05 manager to target some defensive reinforcements.

Klopp was forced to play Fabinho at centre-back against the Foxes, and also deployed James Milner at right-back in what was a patchy back four on paper.

So, who could the Premier League champions sign in January?

Well, the Reds have been linked with a swoop for RB Leipzig colossus Dayot Upamecano, with The Sunday World expecting Liverpool to bid for the Frenchman.

Additionally, the Daily Mail revealed that the Reds asked about Schalke 04 centre-back Ozan Kabak, but were put off by his asking price of £36.2 million.

The danger for Klopp is that he presumably doesn’t want to sign anyone who’s going to block Van Dijk or Gomez’s pathway upon their return.

It’s a real conundrum for the German, although the Express‘ report at least makes it clear that he knows what he wants strengthening in January.
