Toby Alderweireld is a key figure in the current Tottenham Hotspur team.
Alderweireld has been on the books of Tottenham since the summer of 2015 when he joined from Atletico Madrid for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £11.5 million.
The 28-year-old defender’s current contract with the North London outfit runs until June 2020, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
According to The Times, Tottenham want to tie down the Belgium international central defender to a new deal after the summer transfer window shuts down.
It has been reported that the former Ajax star, who has established himself as a regular first-team player at Tottenham and is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, has turned down two offers as he wants £100,000 per week as salary.
“Tottenham hope to tie down Alderweireld to a new deal after the transfer window closes,” states the report in The Times.
“The Belgium centre back has rejected two offers as he wanted £100,000 a week in wages and a release clause in his new deal.”
Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy has underlined the importance of the North London club keeping hold of Alderweireld.
“The player Tottenham really need to keep is Toby Alderweireld,” Murphy wrote in The London Evening Standard.
“Centre-backs of that quality do not grow on trees, so Tottenham have to find a way to pay him what he is worth, without breaking the financial codes they have in place.
“There are always ways and means of doing that and Tottenham might have to be creative to keep hold of one or two of their better players.”
Tottenham finished second in the Premier League last season and will be aiming to challenge for the league title yet again during the 2017-18 campaign.
