The Magpies are considering making a £10 million move for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers in the summer, if they achieve promotion to the Premier League, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The 22-year-old is currently spending the season on loan with Newcastle’s North East rivals Middlesbrough, and has impressed with his assured displays, despite the Teesside outfit’s struggles as a whole.

The towering centre-back is currently out injured with a foot problem, however, and his absence from the Boro side has coincided with their slide down the league table, after losing the four games in which Chambers has missed.

And the Sunday Mirror claim that Rafa Benitez has been impressed by the way in which the Arsenal-owned defender has gone about his business this season.

The newspaper go on to suggest that Newcastle will make a £10 million bid for Chambers in the summer, on the condition that they are a Premier League side next season.

The three-capped England international would certainly fit the profile of the type of player that Benitez wants to bring to Tyneside this summer.

Young, proficient with the ball at his feet, and incredibly talented, Chambers could prove to be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, if they do indeed manage to win the race for his signature.

He would be the ideal partner for Jamaal Lascelles, and the pair could form a formidable central defensive partnership for the next decade or so.
