Reports emanating from Turkey today suggest that the Hammers and Spurs have stepped up the chase for Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, but will have to pay a hefty sum of money in order to prise him away from Turkey this summer, according to Turkish-Football.

Both clubs are thought to be in the market for a new striker this summer.

Slaven Bilic is looking for a 20-goal-per-season man who is capable of playing more than half of the games during a campaign, unlike Andy Carroll.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino is after a back-up for Harry Kane of better quality than Vincent Janssen, who is struggling to settle in north London.

The 25-year-old has been on fire this season, scoring 20 goals in 36 outings for Besiktas, and at this stage of his career, he will surely want to be playing regularly from the start, which makes a potential switch to West Ham more likely than a move to Tottenham where he will be warming the bench.

Turkish-Football claim that both clubs will need to fork out at least £17 million, if they are to sign Tosun in the summer, but suggest that the Hammers have an advantage in the chase for the Turk after Bilic enjoyed a close two-year working relationship with the striker during his time as Besiktas coach.

Whether or not Tosun has the attributes needed to succeed in England remains to be seen, but with the inflated state of today’s transfer market, £17 million seems like a risk worth taking.
