The Belgium international has once again been an integral part of Mauricio Pochettino’s defence this term, playing in every single Premier League and Champions League game for his club.

The Telegraph go on to report that the timing of the announcement is the only remaining issue for Tottenham, as they continue their recent flurry of tying down their most important players to new deals.
The north London outfit have the best defensive record in the league, and have conceded just six goals in 11 league outings, three better than the team with the second best defensive record – Chelsea.

Despite Toby Alderweireld’s absence from the Tottenham side since he sustained an injury against West Bromwich Albion in October, Vertonghen has helped Pochettino’s men maintain their defensive unity, and their stubbornness is highlighted by the fact that they remain the only unbeaten team left in England’s top flight.
Next up for Spurs is a home game against West Ham United upon the resumption of Premier League action after the two-week international break.
