Tottenham Hotspur missed out in a windfall by not qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Rob Wilson, a football finance expert at Sheffield Hallam University, has explained in detail the financial ramifications of Spurs’ failure to qualify though to the knock out stages of the Champions League, as quoted by the Mirror.
Tottenham fans were forced to endure a bitterly disappointing Champions League campaign, after their side put in a series of woeful displays, that consequently saw them finish third in their group.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men did, at least, qualify for the Europa League, however, and football finance expert Robert Wilson outlined how far they will have to go in the competition to match what they would have earned through making it past the group stage in the Champions League, as quoted by the Mirror:
“The financial cost of Tottenham not getting through to the last 16 is huge. There are some unknowns, like who they would have drawn in the Champions League last 16, but based on last year’s figures even a conservative estimate suggests they have lost out on around €20 million by going out, and that figure would be more like €30 million if they had drawn a top team. To make that up in the Europa League, where the financial rewards are still so much less, Spurs will have to win the tournament.”
Whilst Spurs are clearly capable of winning the Europa League, it is clear to see how damaging their exit from Europe’s premier competition was, not just from a footballing aspect, but also from a financial one.
The Lilywhites are already behind the other top teams in England in terms of financial power, especially with the cost of building their new stadium.
So a sustained run in the Europa League could prove to be important for Tottenham, for more reasons than one.
