Leeds United aren’t used to high-profile transfer sagas with regards to big money deals any longer.
That isn’t to say that the Whites haven’t spent big money in recent years, because they forked out £10 million Patrick Bamford a couple of years back, and another £15 million on getting Helder Costa after winning Premier League promotion last month.
But when it comes to the long, protracted, dramatic transfer dealings with elite clubs, it’s been a while since Leeds have sat at this table, but they’re back at it now.
According to Sky Sports News, the West Yorkshire club have seen a second bid of £22 million rejected by Brighton for Ben White.
The 22-year-old joined United on a season-long loan last season and proved himself a vital figure in helping Marcelo Bielsa’s side win promotion after a 16-year exile from the big time.
The report adds that White has already rejected two contract extensions by the Seagulls and it seems inevitable that Leeds will go back with a third bid.
Had the defender joined for £22 million, he would’ve been the club’s second-most expensive signing of all time, after Rio Ferdinand who cost £23.4 million [YEP].
Still, it’s encouraging that Director of Football Victor Orta is trying to re-sign White on a permanent basis and is prepared to spend big to do so.
This is a very highly-rated player and there’s no telling how much Bielsa could develop him further – that’s IF he winds up back at Elland Road and before that happens, Orta’s going to have to raise his stakes.
After all, this is the Premier League.
