Celtic are in advanced talks with James McCarthy to bring the Crystal Palace central midfielder to Celtic Park, according to GiveMeSport.

It has been reported that McCarthy is very likely to join his boyhood club Celtic in the summer transfer window on a free transfer.

The Republic of Ireland international is out of contract at Premier League outfit Palace at the end of the season, and the Hoops are reportedly keen on securing the services of the 30-year-old on a free transfer.

However, according to the report, the deal is being held up by the managerial situation at Celtic, as there is ‘a slight reluctance’ to get the transfer finalised now in case the new manager does not want him.

The Hoops are yet to appoint a permanent successor to Neil Lennon, who left his role at the Glasgow giants in February.

Good signing for Celtic?

McCarthy – who earns £50,000 per week as salary, according to Spotrac – is still only 30 and would be able to do a good job in Scotland.

Scott Brown is leaving Celtic this summer, and the Hoops could do with a replacement, and bringing in the former Everton star on a free transfer would be a good idea.

According to WhoScored, McCarthy has made seven starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League for Palace this season.
