Report: Oli McBurnie to sign Swansea deal despite £4.5m Rangers bid

Glasgow Rangers reportedly made a £4.5 million bid to bring Oli McBurnie to Ibrox.

According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (01/07; page 59), Rangers made a £4.5 million approach for Oli McBurnie this summer, but the Gers look set to miss out with the striker reportedly close to penning a new deal with his current club.

McBurnie is reportedly a target for the Gers after a stunning loan spell with Barnsley. While the Tykes would ultimately be relegated from the Championship, the 22-year-old’s stock rose considerably as he scored nine goals in 17 appearances to give them a righting chance of staying up.

It appears that Steven Gerrard was keen to make the Scotland international his marquee striker signing this summer, with The Sun on Sunday reporting that the Light Blues offered £4.5 million to bring McBurnie to Ibrox.

However, The Sun on Sunday (01/07; page 59) reports that Swansea City have fended off the Gers’ approach are now close to agreeing a new contract with the youngster ahead of their season in the Championship.

It was a major statement of intent from Rangers to seemingly make such a bid for McBurnie. As reported by the Swans’ official website in 2016, the striker has just one year on his current contract, so to make such a substantial bid at this point appears to say a lot about how determined Gerrard was to bring him to the Scottish Premiership.

However, it appears that McBurnie looks set to stay at the Liberty Stadium for the time-being. And with Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera the only senior strikers on Rangers’ books currently, the Ibrox faithful will certainly be hoping that it does not take Gerrard and Mark Allen long to switch their attention elsewhere if their McBurnie interest leads to a dead end.
