Rangers are reportedly close to terminating Joey Barton’s contract.
According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are on the verge of agreeing to terminate the contract of controversial midfielder Joey Barton.
Barton, 33, was seen as Rangers’ marquee summer signing, as after helping Burnley win promotion back to the Premier League last season, he chose to leave Turf Moor on a free transfer.
Joey Barton applauds fans as he is substituted
Rangers snapped Barton up on a two-year contract, and he was viewed as a major coup given that Rangers had only just been promoted back to the Scottish Premiership.
However, Barton’s move to Ibrox has turned into a nightmare. Having struggled to make an impact in his first eight games with the club, Barton was then suspended by the club following a training ground bust-up with manager Mark Warburton and team-mate Andy Halliday back in September.

Barton hasn’t played for Rangers since, but was allowed to return to the club for training with the Rangers academy, with many expecting him to leave during the January transfer window.
Now though, The Scottish Sun report that talks have been held over the last 48 hours, and there is now a belief that Rangers are set to reach an agreement to terminate Barton’s contract ahead of January.
Rangers’ Joey Barton looks dejected
It’s stated that, after penning a two-year deal on £18,000-a-week, Rangers are close to parting ways with Barton, allowing him to become a free agent.
Barton’s time in Glasgow has been a complete disaster, and the Rangers board may now be willing to simply pay up his contract and let him go, just to move on from this whole sorry saga.
