The departure of Nuno Espirito Santo means a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers now looks unlikely for Schalke skipper Omar Mascarell, as reported by Deporpress.
They do say a captain should always go down with his ship.
While many around him leapt into the lifeboats at the first sign of choppy waters, Mascarell was never going to turn his back on a Schalke side hurtling towards an iceberg marked ‘relegation’.
When asked about his future in January, the one-time Derby County loanee insisted that he would stay put until the end of a torturous season.
And he was true to his word.
Now, however, could be a different story. With one year left on his contract, a debt-ridden Schalke would gladly sell the deep-lying midfielder for as little as £4 million, while Mascarell himself has admitted that he wants ‘a new adventure’ after three years in Gelsenkirchen.
Is Schalke’s captain heading to Wolves?
Wolves have been linked on numerous occasions throughout the last few months.
Tellingly, however, things have gone quiet since Nuno Espirito Santo walked away from Molineux in May, replaced by Bruno Lage.
And, according to Deporpress, Nuno’s departure means a return to England – seven years after his short-lived spell at Pride Park – looks increasingly unlikely.
Not that Mascarell will be too disappointed.
The Real Madrid academy graduate was prioritising a return to his native Spain anyway, with Valencia in pole position to land a 28-year-old who would bring leadership and experience to a rather callow squad.
Wolves, meanwhile, are still in the market for a ‘number six’ in the Mascarell mould.
It seems, however, that they have turned their attention to the Portuguese duo of Joao Palhinha and Samu Costa.
