Nuno Espirito Santo is a big fan of Oskar Buur and Dion Sanderson but remains “desperate” for Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign a right-back before the transfer window closes in October, according to the Birmingham Mail.

In the space of a week, the mood has switched from frustration to excitement at Molineux.

The £35 million, club-record signing of Porto teenager Fabio Silva might have dominated the headlines, and understandably so, but the signing of Marcal also sees Wolves snap up a proven defender who shone as Lyon reached the Champions League semi-finals last season.

The versatile Marcal will offer cover at left-wing back and in the centre. And, according to the Daily Mail, a young, box-to-box midfielder is on his way too. Vitor Ferreira, Silva’s former Porto teammate, will join on loan with an option to buy for £18 million.

However, with the Premier League season due to kick off this weekend, one gaping hole remains in Nuno’s starting XI.

Thanks to the departure of fans’ favourite Matt Doherty to Tottenham, no one is any the wiser about who will start in the right-wingback role during Monday’s trip to Sheffield United.

The Birmingham Mail reports Nuno rates youngsters Buur and Sanderson highly but the fact remains they have played only 20 minutes of league football for Wolves between them – and none in the Premier League.

No wonder Nuno is demanding right-sided reinforcements, even if Sanderson did offer a reminder of his potential during an impressive loan spell at Cardiff City last season.

Wolves have been linked with another Porto starlet, Tomas Esteves, and Tottenham’s Serge Aurier, although a deal for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles (below) is dead in the water.
