The former Nottingham Forest winger is recently unemployed.

Head coach Martin O'Neill of Ireland reacts during the FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier between Serbia and Ireland at stadium Rajko Mitic on September 5, 2016 in Belgrade.

Martin O’Neill is the latest name linked with the Nottingham Forest manager’s job.

According to the Nottingham Post, the former Forest winger features on the Reds’ shortlist of options should Aitor Karanka leave his post.

And the newspaper claims that while O’Neill has previously turned down a City Ground return under the current regime, the cub are ‘understood to hope that he might be persuaded’ this time around, having recently left his role with the Republic of Ireland.

It adds, however, that the Ulsterman’s wages could prove a stumbling block.

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka looks on at Pride Park Stadium on December 17, 2018 in Derby, England.

Karanka is said to be under pressure after failing to lead Nottingham Forest into the play-offs, and faces the sack if the Reds’ fortunes fail to improve against Millwall and Leeds United.

According to the Nottingham Post, Slavisa Jokanovic is also on the club’s list of possible replacements.

Forest fans – would O’Neill be a good fit if Karanka leaves the City Ground?
