According to a report from The Sun (19/1; page 67), Nottingham Forest could make a move for Stoke City winger James McClean as Martin O’Neill looks to add to his squad at the City Ground.

O’Neill did not need to wait too long for his first signing since becoming Forest boss, with Yohan Benalouane joining from Leicester City. And he is seemingly hoping that he can swiftly add another new face to his squad.

The Sun (19/1; page 67) reports that Stoke wide-man McClean is on his radar with the Potters open to offers for the 29-year-old, who, of course, played extensively under O’Neill during his time as Republic of Ireland boss.

McClean has not had a bad year by any means. Only six players have provided more assists in the Championship than the six that the former West Brom man has contributed this term.

He has been a polarising figure at various stages throughout his career. But if Forest can get a good deal for the winger, then he would arguably be a very good addition with promotion out of the second tier certainly not out of the question.

But with McClean – who cost £5 million in the summer, according to Stoke’s official website – providing the assist for the winning goal against Leeds on Saturday, perhaps Nathan Jones will need to be convinced that selling him to a side currently one point better off is a smart idea.
