Nottingham Forest have failed with a loan bid for Joe Lumley, with Queens Park Rangers hoping to sell a goalkeeper who will become a free agent in the summer, as reported by Sky Sports (Live blog, 9.57am).

Forest have already snapped up one Championship veteran on deadline day, with Glen Murray arriving to reunite with his former Brighton and Hove Albion boss Chris Hughton at the City Ground.

There is still work to be done, however, if the Midland giants want to reinforce their ranks at the other end of the pitch too.

Sky claims that, with his contract expiring in July, QPR are open to selling Lumley.

Forest have made a loan bid for the 25-year-old shot-stopper but, if they are willing to put a cash sum on the table instead, Rangers would be ready to enter negotiations in the final few hours of the transfer window.

Lumley has fallen behind the excellent Seny Dieng in the Loftus Road pecking order and enjoyed brief spells at Gillingham and Doncaster Rovers earlier this season, joining a pair of League One clubs on emergency loan deals.

It is hard to imagine Lumley ousting Brice Samba at Nottingham Forest either, even if the former Caen ‘keeper has not been quite as imperious in 2020/21 as he was during his debut season in English football.

“In goalkeeping terms, (Lumley is) very young still,” Warburton, the current-QPR and former Forest boss, told FourFourTwo after a 2-0 victory over Preston North End not long ago.

“He’s come through a couple of mistakes and showed his quality. He was outstanding for us today.

“He’s learned from his mistakes, has stepped up, the crowd supported him and I’m delighted. The save he made late in the game, low to his left, was a world-class save.”
