Both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United want a new number one – and that has taken them to Birmingham City’s Tomasz Kuszczak
A new goalkeeper remains a must for Nottingham Forest in the final two weeks of the transfer window.
Though 22-year-old Jordan Smith continues to impress between the sticks, and Stephen Henderson has just returned from a long-term injury lay-off, Forest would benefit from the addition of an experienced shot-stopper with their defence remaining decidedly shaky, epitomised by Saturday’s 4-3 win at Brentford.
And the Nottingham Post report that Tomasz Kuszczak is the latest name in the frame, the 35-year-old losing his place at Birmingham City to new signing David Stockdale.
The former Polish international, who won the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008, was a regular for Birmingham for the last two seasons and remains one of the Championship’s most reliable shot-stoppers.
However, the report adds that Forest face competition from Newcastle United, whose manager Rafael Benitez is still in the market for a new number one.
Karl Darlow, who starred as Newcastle won the Championship title last season, is understood to have lost the faith of Benitez, who started Rob Elliot (below, left) between the sticks for their Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Magpies have been linked with a whole host of goalkeepers with top flight experience, from former Liverpool custodian Pepe Reina to new Chelsea back-up Willy Caballero, but so far Newcastle have failed to add a new glovesman to their ranks.
However, Kuszczak wouldn’t be the most exciting addition, having not played Premier League football since leaving Manchester United for Brighton in 2012.
