Jay Foulston is Newport County’s third youngest player of all time and has piqued the interest of Championship side Norwich City.
Norwich City may have been the joint highest goalscorers in the Championship last season but a tally of 69 conceded ensured they finished the campaign in mid-table rather than the top six.
And while Newport County’s 16-year-old centre-back Jay Foulston is unlikely to solve The Canaries’ tendency to ship soft goals, reports in the South Wales Argus that he is on Norwich’s radar at least suggests that they are attempting to reinforce their Achilles heel.
The report claims that the talented defender, who was given a chance to shine in pre-season, has been identified as a potential star of the future by Norwich. He’s certainly highly-rated at Newport, becoming the third youngest player in the club’s history when making his senior bow against Southend United in the EFL Cup last month.
And Newport manager Michael Flynn sees no reason why Foulston cannot make the step up from academy to senior football with ease, comparing him to Regan Poole who earned a move to Manchester United in 2015 after just 15 appearances in the first-team.
“I thought Jay Foulston at centre-back was outstanding,” Flynn told the South Wales Argus when discussing the defender’s pre-season performances. “He’s just turned 16 and, playing against men, I thought he was brilliant.
However, Foulston will surely be aware that a move to Championship side Norwich will come at a cost, with his first-team opportunities likely to dry up at Carrow Road for the time being at least.
