Southampton are reportedly in the driving seat to sign James Maddison from Norwich City this summer.

According to a report from The Sun, Southampton are closing in on a stunning deal to sign James Maddison after the Saints saw a bid in excess of £20 million accepted by Norwich City.

The Sun reports that Maddison is one of the most highly sought-after players in the country this summer with a host of Premier League sides looking to bag his signature after a superb season at Carrow Road.

The Canaries may have struggled to put together any kind of promotion charge in the second tier, but Maddison scored 14 goals and contributed eight assists in the Championship to establish himself as the club’s talisman.

But could he soon be taking on a similar role in the top flight? The Sun reports that the Saints have agreed a fee of more than £20 million for the youngster and now plan to open talks with Maddison regarding a potential move to St Mary’s.

Maddison may be unproven at the highest level, but it would still be a coup for Mark Hughes’ men if they managed to get him through the door this summer as he appears to be destined for an extremely bright future.

It would also be a tremendous statement of intent from the Saints after a campaign which saw the south coast side come dangerously close to joining Norwich in the Championship, if they managed to capitalise on their current position and win the race to sign Maddison this summer.
