Newcastle United’s new owners would like to see Gareth Southgate take charge, 90 Min claims.

Southgate in at Newcastle?

Newcastle are set to be on the hunt for a new manager, after their takeover went through yesterday.

Steve Bruce has not been officially dismissed yet, but it is thought that the Newcastle boss’s days at St. James’ Park are now numbered.

The Magpies are already said to be looking at alternative options, and Southgate is claimed to be right at the top of the list.

The England boss has led the Three Lions to their first major tournament final since 1966 and also to a World Cup semi-final in the past three years.

The problem for Newcastle is that Southgate is unable to take the job before the World Cup next year, so he wouldn’t be able to immediately arrive.

Alternative options

Newcastle’s new owners are also said to like Michael Carrick, who is still looking for his first managerial job.

Carrick is currently working as one of Manchester United’s backroom staff, but was born in the North East so would know Newcastle well.

Both would be fairly controversial choices if they were to arrive at Newcastle.

Southgate has done an impressive job with England in terms of results, but his style of play has come under criticism.

He has won a Premier League manager of the Month award before and won 29 matches in England’s top flight during his first stint in club management with Middlesbrough.

He has been described as ‘brilliant’ by the likes of David Seaman (Independent), after earning great praise at Euro2020 over the summer.

But whether Newcastle fans would be unanimously behind the decision to place him in charge remains to be seen, if he was to take the job.
