Newcastle United are reportedly unwilling to meet Miguel Almiron’s wage demands as they look to agree a January move for the midfielder.
Newcastle could need to be willing to offer Miguel Almiron £70,000-a-week to convince him to move to St James’ Park next month, with The Sun on Sunday (23/12; page 61) reporting that he has asked for significantly more.
Rafa Benitez has reportedly pinpointed Almiron as the man that he wants as his marquee addition when the January window opens after the 24-year-old enjoyed a stunning season in MLS with Atlanta United.
The Sun on Sunday (23/12; page 61) reports that Almiron is rated at £25 million by his current side, but it is his wage demands that could ultimately scupper the Magpies’ hopes of getting the move across the line.
The report suggests that Almiron wants £5 million a year on Tyneside, and that has left the move in doubt. It is suggested that a compromise around the £70,000-a-week mark could be required to get talks back on track.
Almiron was superb last season, reaching double figures for goals and assists. But given that his lack of Premier League experience, it is unquestionably going to be a risk for Newcastle when you consider the potential terms of the deal.
Even if they agree to the compromise, Almiron will be under enormous pressure to make a major impact at St James’ Park. But Benitez’s desire to keep pushing for a deal certainly hints that he believes that the Paraguay international could be an inspired addition, whatever the cost.
