According to The Sunday Mirror (28/06, p71), Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff still intends to sign for Udinese this summer.
It’s claimed that Longstaff remains destined for a move to Italy as things stand. Newcastle have made their final offer to Longstaff, in a last-gasp attempt to keep him.
However, Udinese have offered Longstaff a deal worth £30,000-a-week. That’s some way beyond the £20,000-a-week Newcastle offered, which Steve Bruce described as ‘wonderful’.
Newcastle will have been hoping to tempt Longstaff into staying, but with no takeover done and their offer still short of Udinese’s, it looks like he will go.
The 20-year-old has come up through the Newcastle ranks, and made a dream Premier League debut earlier this season as he scored the winner against Manchester United.
Remarkably, Longstaff then scored against United again in December, all with contract uncertainty hanging over him.
It now seems that Udinese are still in pole position to secure Longstaff, and Newcastle look to be losing hope of keeping their homegrown midfielder.
