Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has reportedly snubbed a move to West Brom.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has rejected a move to West Bromwich Albion on deadline day.
Gayle, 29, spent last season on loan at West Brom, and enjoyed a superb season in front of goal, scoring 24 times in 41 outings.
The striker has returned to Newcastle this summer, and could play a role in Steve Bruce’s Magpies side, but he had the chance to leave the club on deadline day.
It’s claimed that West Brom were willing to pay £5million to take Gayle on loan and then sign him permanently for £15million next summer if the Baggies won promotion – a deal Newcastle were happy with, as they’d have been picking up £20million in total.
However, Gayle rejected the move, and Stoke City couldn’t get him either, failing to agree terms on a contract with the striker.
The two teams ended up signing different strikers, as West Brom landed Charlie Austin from Southampton, and Stoke signed Scott Hogan on loan from Aston Villa.
Gayle allegedly didn’t want another loan move, and would only leave Newcastle permanently, seemingly unwilling to risk heading back to the West Midlands temporarily again.
Gayle will now stay at Newcastle at least until January, and hopefully can offer another goalscoring option alongside new boys Joelinton and Andy Carroll, especially as Bruce is a big fan of him, having told The Chronicle that he has previously tried to sign Gayle for other clubs – and his stay may just please the Magpies boss as he looks to give Gayle another chance.
