Hull City and Burnley were reportedly keen on the Newcastle United man.

The Mail have reported that Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote is close to sealing a move to Greek giants Olympiacos, despite late interest from Burnley.

The 30-year-old is strongly expected to leave Tyneside before the transfer window closes, having struggled for minutes under manager Rafael Benitez.

The Ivorian seemed set to seal a switch to China back in January but that move never materialised.

And The Mail report that a £2 million switch to Olympiacos beckons for the once-fan favourite at St James’s Park, but the report goes on to claim that Burnley and Hull City had also been interested in signing the defensive midfielder.

Burnley need a no-nonsense figure in midfield after losing Joey Barton and David Jones to Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, but it appears as if Sean Dyche’s Clarets have missed the boat.

The Greek side do not have Champions League to offer Tiote, so it seems odd that he may favour a switch to Olympiacos rather than return to the Premier League.

He is tried and tested in England’s top flight, having enjoyed an excellent start to life at Newcastle but it has been a tough last few seasons by way of fitness and form.
