Antonio Barreca endured a disastrous loan spell at Newcastle United.

The Chronicle has claimed that Newcastle United won’t be taking up their option to sign Antonio Barreca this summer.

Barreca joined Newcastle in a half-season loan from Monaco in January.

But the 24-year-old managed only five minutes of Premier League football and, according to The Chronicle, the Magpies won’t be exercising their option to sign the £8 million man after his ‘disastrous’ stint in the North-East.

The report adds that the St James’s Park club will be signing a replacement to compete with Paul Dummett, United’s only recognised left-sided defender as of right now, and a right-back.

Barreca only managed to make Rafael Benitez’s first-team squad on three occasions, and was an unused substitute in games against Brighton and Liverpool toward the end of the campaign.

He really was a dreadful signing by the Spanish manager and even at £8 million, the Ligue 1 outfit could seriously struggle to shift him.
