Newcastle United are set to make an £18 million bid for Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey, according to TuttoJuve.

Steve Bruce is targeting the best of British this summer and, even without the backing of a Saudi Arabian billionaire, there is no reason to believe that the Magpies cannot still pull off a couple of eye-catching signings.

Mike Ashley is hardly renowned for his willingness to splash the cash but, in 2019 alone, the much-maligned owner invested over £60 million in bringing Joelinton and Miguel Almiron to Tyneside.

And while Ramsey is far from the typical Ashley signing (he has very little sell-on value at the age of 29 after all) the Sports Direct tycoon may be tempted to throw a sizeable sum at a proven, top-level performer who should have fans filling those empty seats once again at St James’ Park.

If Newcastle want to prove their ambition to an increasingly disillusioned fanbase, signing Ramsey would be one hell of a statement.

TuttoJuve claims that the north east giants are even planning an £18 million offer for the Wales international.

Former Arsenal star Ramsey only joined Juventus last summer but, after making just 11 Serie A stars during a forgettable debut season in Turin, the Serie A champions may be tempted by the prospect of making a near £20 million profit on a player who has struggled to live up to lofty expectations.

And, having been hit hard by the ongoing financial crisis, Juventus would certainly benefit from getting Ramsey’s staggering £400,000-a-week pay-packet off the wage bill.

A clinical finisher who is famed for making those Lampard-esque bursts into the penalty area, Ramsey should add goals to a Newcastle side who averaged just one a game last season.
