Newcastle United could look to rival Liverpool for Gremio forward Luan after being offered the Brazilian.

According to a report from The Sun, Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign Gremio forward Luan during the final days of the January transfer window in a move that may well frustrate Liverpool.

The Sun reports that the Reds have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old, who has certainly impressed this season. Luan scored six goals and provided six assists in 20 appearances in the top flight last season and was handed his international debut for Brazil’s senior side last year.

And while he may well be Premier League bound before the end of the window, it appears that St James’ Park could actually prove to be his destination, with The Sun suggesting that Rafa Benitez has been offered the opportunity to sign Luan.

The Sun adds that Benitez wants to strengthen Newcastle’s striker options, so the chance to sign Luan for £17.5 million may prove to be tempting for the Spaniard as he looks to give the Magpies the depth they need to avoid the drop in the Premier League.

Luan has regularly provided goals and assists for Gremio, so it would certainly appear that £17.5 million could potentially prove to be a real bargain if he is capable of replicating that kind of form in England.

Newcastle travel to Chelsea for the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday before they return to Premier League action on Wednesday night – which is also transfer deadline day – to take on Burnley at home.
