Newcastle United have shown an interest in signing Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele with Arsenal also keen.
That is according to a report from 90Min, who claim that Dembele is attracting major Premier League interest.
It’s stated that intermediaries met with Dembele’s agents during a recent trip to England.
Newcastle hold an interest in signing Dembele and intermediaries working on their behalf made that interest known.
Newcastle aren’t exactly alone in the race though.
Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are all understood to be keen on Dembele.
Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are in the race too with Dembele potentially unwilling to sign another contract extension.
Dembele is out of contract in 2024 so this summer maybe Barcelona’s last chance to bring in some cash for the wide man.
The fee won’t be anywhere near £135million with Barcelona hardly having much leverage – especially as they need to bring in cash for their own signings.
Why on earth was Ousmane Dembele watching Sunderland?
Dembele is a household name having cost Barcelona a staggering £135million back in 2017.
The Frenchman is a speedy and skilful winger, comfortable on both feet but famously injury-prone.
It’s a little hard to imagine him in Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side but maybe the Magpies think he can be a marquee addition.
This rumour will raise a few eyebrow, especially after Dembele was spotted at a Sunderland game just a few weeks ago.
Dembele attended Sunderland’s clash with Sheffield United in March, sitting alongside Black Cats owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.
Dembele, who played in the World Cup final for France, must have been one of the last players Sunderland fans expected to see in the stands.
The pair appear to be friends but Dembele would have to become a football rival to Dreyfus if he’s going to join Newcastle.
