Newcastle United are eyeing up the signing of Sheffield United’s Chris Basham as his contract at Bramall Lane runs down, according to the Daily Mail.
Basham has just a year left on his deal with the Blades, and Newcastle now feel that they could land him in a potential bargain deal this summer.
Basham is capable of covering at either centre-back or in defensive midfield, and would surely firm up Newcastle’s defence even further.
The Blades defender has had a hugely impressive season, where he has been a key part of Chris Wilder’s side.
Basham has made more tackles and interceptions than any other Premier League centre-back.
But Blades will surely be keen to keep hold of the experienced defender, especially as Wilder is such a big fan of the Newcastle target.
“He’s one of my favourite players,” Wilder said to Sheffield Star.

“When I finish managing and come out of the game and look back, he’ll be right up there in terms of the players I’ve coached and managed. He’s an absolute diamond of a lad.”
If Basham was to join Newcastle he would have a fight on his hands to earn a first-team spot.
Newcastle are already well stocked at centre-back with Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar already at St. James’ Park.
