Steve Bruce is keen to add a British core to his Newcastle United squad this summer and is targeting Everton’s Tom Davies as a potential signing, according to a report.

The Daily Mail have claimed that Newcastle are preparing a £12 million move for the boyhood Toffees fan, who broke into the first-team five years ago.

Liverpool-born Davies was nominated for the Golden Boy award during the 2018/19 season, but he ended up losing out to Juventus star, Matthijs De Ligt.

In just his second Premier League start, Davies scored a brilliant solo goal against Manchester City to announce himself on the world stage.

Whilst the 22-year-old has shown glimpses of what he’s about since then, he perhaps hasn’t hit the heights many expected him to.

Davies is suited to playing the number 8 role, has the passing range, drive and aggression in his game to be a top-quality midfielder.

But it hasn’t worked out for him recently and it seems as though he needs a coach to get the best out of him – surely his preference would be to stay at Goodison and work under Carlo Ancelotti rather than move up north to work under Bruce?

Added with that, Ancelotti needs midfield options if he is to guide Everton to Europe, so losing Davies wouldn’t be ideal.

Either way, Bruce sees Davies’ potential and clearly feels he can get the best out of the Englishmen, who still has a lot more to give.
