Rafa Benitez is reportedly hoping that he will be able to make Salomon Rondon’s move to Newcastle United permanent in January.

According to a report from The Northern Echo, Newcastle are planning to initiate talks with West Brom during the January window over converting Salomon Rondon’s loan into a permanent move.

Rondon arrived at St James’ Park over the summer and is starting to win round many of the Toon Army with his displays. His most recent performance saw the Venezuelan bag a brace to help the Magpies to a 2-1 win over Bournemouth just before the international break.

The Northern Echo reports that Mike Ashley refused to pay the £16.5 million that it would have taken to sign Rondon permanently in the summer. But it appears that he may have had a change of heart.

The report adds that Newcastle officials will look to restart talks with the Baggies in January in the hope that they could potentially make his move permanent – and they could be considering allowing Dwight Gayle’s loan at The Hawthorns to head down a similar path. It is also noted that Rondon joining permanently will free up a loan spot in Rafa Benitez’s squad.

The Northern Echo suggests that Rondon has no desire to return to his parent club even if they are promoted. And with Gayle largely scoring for fun with Darren Moore’s side, it appears that a January agreement could suit all parties.

Rondon’s task is to now prove over the coming weeks before the window opens that Newcastle would be making a very smart move by looking to strike a deal that will see him join permanently.
