According to the London Evening Standard, Crystal Palace are unlikely to let Pape Souare join Newcastle United during this month’s transfer window.
Newcastle are in desperate need of reinforcements this month, but with the club’s takeover saga still dragging on, manager Rafael Benitez may be limited to bargains and loans.
The Magpies will be looking to strengthen a host of positions, and a priority has to be bringing in a left back to compete with Paul Dummett, given the lack of natural competition for him.
Now, the London Evening Standard report that Newcastle are interested in luring Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare to Tyneside – but the Eagles are unlikely to let him go.
Palace left back Jeffrey Schlupp is currently out injured, meaning Roy Hodgson needs Souare as cover, and they are reluctant to let him leave whilst Schlupp remains out.
Souare, 27, joined Palace from Lille back in January 2015, and has played more than 50 times for the club, including three appearances in all competitions this season.
The Senegal international lost 11 months of his career to injury after a car crash in September 2016, and has been eased back into action this season as a result.
Newcastle may still keep tabs on Souare’s situation as the January transfer window goes on, but Palace currently look unlikely to let him leave, meaning Benitez may need to look at other left backs this month.
